Guest Post: Fitness Success With Fitspiration

**Michelle reached out to me a few weeks ago about writing a post about what inspires people to lead a healthy lifestyle. I love the idea of "Fitspiration" especially now when things get hectic with vacations and summer fun plans.  It's always a great to have mini-goals to keep you motivated- I always feel so much more proud of my hard work when I look back and see everything that I have accomplished.

Practically everyone would agree that a healthy lifestyle is essential to longevity and quality  of life. Yet, heart attack and stroke are leading causes of death. Every year we vow to make a change. Vows are often motivated by special events, a milestone birthday or a medical, “wake up” call. Unfortunately, these resolutions last as long as it takes to make them. If we are to be honest, we have no excuse. It is a matter of discipline.

Fortunately, there are simple solutions to combat this malady, but we must be diligent to employ them. It is important to be smart about your fitness goals. Have a specific goal in mind. You may want to run a specific distance in a specified time or train for an event. Be as specific as possible. Also, make sure you can easily achieve your goal. Excitement and novelty have a tendency to make us set unattainable goals. As the stresses and activities of life continue, we quickly abandon our goals and find ourselves in the same rut. Therefore, it is critically important to ensure your goal is attainable.

Do not set yourself up for failure with unrealistic standards. If you’ve not trained in years, daily exercise is unlikely. Set a smaller goal. You must develop the mindset first. It is important to be honest with yourself. Consider your current fitness level, age and preexisting medical conditions. Is your goal relevant? If you are a 50 year old novice, do not train like a 20 year old athlete. Make sure your goal is appropriate for you. There is no quicker road to injury and burnout.

As you set your goal, it is also important to give yourself a specific time period to accomplish it. Hold yourself to a standard. Whether your time is bound in small increments or the big picture, set a time standard that produces easy adherence.

Now that we have our goal, what is going to keep us on track? Goals must be written and progress must be charted. This provides daily, visual inspiration toward the ultimate goal. When you document fitness goals on an inspiration board, you can celebrate daily achievement. This is fitspiration. Documentation gives you a realistic view of your efforts. It is easy to think we are accomplishing our goals. However, fitspiration leaves no question regarding our efforts and allows adjustments to ensure adherence.

A written goal is often the difference between exercise success and failure. It is easy to use time, work and the many challenges of life as excuses. However, written goals hold us to a standard outside ourselves. They produce accountability and allow us to celebrate success. They may also inspire others toward disciplines that produce healthy living.

Remember that fitspiration is a fluid thing. What motivated you 3 months ago may not still excite you. Keep adding to your vision board. Keep feeding the flame.

  • Golf Course- There is a popular Upstate New York golf course near my work, called Shenendoah, where I’ve started to take some lessons. I’m not very good at golf, but I love that I can be outside and all the walking.
  • Green Machine Smoothie- A part of my personal goal live a more balanced, healthy life, I need to incorporate my nutritious snacks into my daily diet.
  • Hoodie zip-up - What better way to boost motivation than to purchase some cute workout gear?  I love this cozy hoodie from Lululemon.  The bright fun color makes it perfect for summer!  Although there apparel can be pricey, you can find comparable items at places like Target.
  • Yoga - I’m really inspired by yoga for a number of reasons.  Yoga focuses the mind and body, teaching ourselves to find a spiritual balance.  I also love that yoga can be done anywhere, even the beach!  Yoga is great for beginners and the more advanced athlete.
  • Inspiration Quote- It’s important that I set weekly progress goals to help keep myself on track of achieving my goal.  Also by signing up for a specific tournament, it will help me plan my schedule of goals, and allow myself plenty of time to practice and train.

Thank you Michelle for reaching out to me and writing this wonderful post!

My Fitness Journey

I first dabbled into fitness when I was in college.  My freshman roommate was into going to the gym and working out.  At that point in time I was probably 35 to 40 pounds heavier than I am now.  I lost around 15 to 20 pounds my freshman year thanks to my healthy influence.  Honestly I don't remember too much about my workout routine, it was probably more cardio than anything and having friends as workout partners.  This carried throughout my college career.  I do remember senior year loving Splenda.  I always remember adding 2 packets to my morning oatmeal every day.  (I cringe now, but you live and learn.)  Fast forward to after graduation, I had back surgery that July for a herniated disc and a bone chip floating around.  January 2007 I landed my first office job and became sedatary.  Within that time frame, I gained all of the weight that I lost in college and remember picking out capris that summer in my old size pre-college.  Then I vowed to myself I wouldn't be this weight again.  One night I stumbled upon some healthy living blogs.  I specifically remember Tina's blog the most,  This started my official healthier living that I have maintained today.  At that time I started an exercise regimen and was introduced to Turbo Jam.  I was drawn to it because it looked like a lot of fun.  Chalene is a fantastic motivator and the workouts seem to fly by because it didn't feel like I was working out.  Working out combined with eating nutritious foods helped me to drop the weight and keep it off since 2007.

Fast forward to now: my workouts now are short and effective.  Honestly I don't have the attention span to do more than hour of exercise.  I did do a month of Insanity last year but I got burnt out on it.  I loved how Insanity got my heart rate up but the length of the workouts were sometimes a drag.  Enter Shaun T's new workout, FOCUS T25.  Can I say how excited I am to try it?! 25 minutes of pure sweat with minimal equipment (yoga mat, resistance band and a pair of weights).  It's scheduled release is for June of this year, and I am marking it on my calendar.  I love to workout at home and Beachbody's programs make it easier to get in a quality workout without having to drive to the gym.

*Disclaimer: I was contacted by Beachbody to do this review. I did not receive any compensation for this post.  This review is my sole opinion only.

5 Workouts for When You're Away From Home (No Gym Required!)

We leave for Texas tonight and since we are not staying at a hotel I don't have access to a gym.  This means getting creative on getting a good workout in.  Here are five ideas to get working out to.

  1. Enjoy your surroundings!  It's a vacation for a reason.  Take a walk, hike, bike ride through a park, go swimming.  Do activities that give you the most enjoyment and that are fun.
  2. Make up your on HITT workout using the Seconds app.  I've been doing 20 seconds on with 10 seconds of rest with four movements, repeat for a total of 2 sets.  Exercises include jumping jacks, high knees, burpees, and vertical jumps.  (Note you can play around with timing to, if you have a higher endurance try 30 seconds on 15 seconds off etc.)
  3. A free 20 minute Yoga class from Yogadownload.  All of the classes are in audio form. If you're not familiar with yoga they offer a pose guide to help guide you.  They also have a YouTube channel as well which I think are much easier to follow.
  4. Your own bodyweight circuit workout.  Think squats, planks, lunges, pushups, etc.  Here is a handy guide to 50 Bodyweight exercises.
  5. Youtube channels!
  • Fitness Blender (has HIIT/Tabata style workouts, as well as strength training and beginners workouts too.)
  • Fitnessista (offers great HITT workouts and 5 minute Ab Burners)
  • BexLife (gives targeted workouts (i.e. abs, butt/thighs) as well as mediation and cardio workouts)
  • Blogilates (A lot of Pilates workouts that only require a mat.)
  • ZuzkaLight (Zuzka offers a ton of high intensity workouts that take little time.)
  • FitTV (gives you a lot of different workouts from dancing to yoga to strength training)

If you only get in a few workouts don't sweat the small stuff.   Just remember, exercise will always be there when you get back from your trip.   Spending time with loved ones is priceless and good for the soul. :)

How do you fit exercise in on vacation?
What are your favorite Youtube workout channels?

1 Minute Upper Body Burnout Workout

Lately I have been a bit bored with my strength training.  I switched up my splits from Synergistic to Upper and Lower body recently to breath new life into my routine.  (Gina has a great post on splits here.)  On Tuesday I wanted to strength train but was already bored with my somewhat new routine.  This is a new upper body workout I came up with.  I used the Runloop's Interval Timer app to tell me when 1 minute was up.  I set the timer up as a Circuit Training Timer with 9 exercises for 1 minute and 25 seconds of rest after each exercise.  The only con about the free version of this app is that it does not save your timer after you're done using it, but I'm ok with saving $5 for the full version. ;)  I did this workout twice with 8lb dumbbells and the next day my upper body was sore.  Not so sore that I couldn't move but sore enough to know that I kicked it's booty.

I am thinking of posting a lower body burner in future so stayed tune!  Let me know how you did in the comments!
